Day 3 A Day in Ft Lauderdale

We decided to take today fairly easy, it is going to be a busy 49 days on this cruise.  The ratio between sea days and port days is going to be different to what we are used…  anything more than 2 seadays in a row will be a rarity on this trip.
We started the day with the most important job, purchasing our wine supply.  Choosing was difficult, the varieties we knew but the brands we didn’t…. Once we had them back in our room, we walked down along 17th street until we reached the water front.
Because 49 days will not be long enough, we decide that today, we will also spend on the water. My research told me that cruising the Fort Lauderdale water ways was a must and the best way was to do it is by water taxi.  For $28 per person we could spend all day doing just that.   The round trip takes about 2 hours.
The running commentary given by our humorous captain, informed us about the beautiful homes and who they belong to as we passed by.  The name dropping was just water off a ducks back to us Australians as most homes belong entrepreneurs and major company owners, and to quote our captain, those with more money than “sense”, or have they … apparently it is a bit of a tax haven for those with a Florida address.  This probably explains why the majority of time the homes are empty.  Some of the mansions along the keys are amazing, some traditional, some very modern and some just a bit wacky.  Beautifully manicured gardens, amazing swimming pools and great sculptures adorn the waterfront.
It was actually very relaxing cruising the river and lo and behold who should we see at Stop No 10 but the Phillis’s ….  They finally got out of bed..  It was great to see them and now it really felt that our holiday had started.
We enjoyed the rest of the day together.  We hopped off at Las Olas and had a spot of lunch at The Filthy Pig, then back on the water taxi and enjoyed a trip down to Margaritaville.  It was getting late by now, so we stayed on and returned to our stop where it was a short walk back to the hotel.

One of the oldest homes on the waterfront.

The largest home on the waterfront
